Spring Things!
Getting your property ready for the growing season can feel overwhelming—but at Beall’s Nursery, we’re here to make it easy and enjoyable. Knowing what to tackle first and when to start is the key to success.

As early as February and March, when spring starts to peek out, it's your chance to get a jump start—and soak up some much-needed vitamin D! Begin by cleaning up leaves and debris that have accumulated over the winter. Wet leaves can cause fungal issues for your plants, so it’s important to clear them out early.

Take time to inspect trees and shrubs for winter damage and prune any dead branches. Not sure if a branch is alive? Scratch the bark with your fingernail—if it’s green and pliable inside, it’s still living. If it’s dry and brown, it’s time to prune.
Planning to transplant trees or shrubs? Do it now—before they bud. Waiting too long can send the plant into shock.

Planning Your Vegetable Garden
Early spring is a great time to plan your veggie garden. Decide what you want to grow and research companion planting to make the most of your space.

Now’s the time to add mushroom manure and garden lime to your garden beds or containers. You can mix it into the soil or layer it on top. Also, inspect fences and trellises for winter damage and make any needed repairs.
  • Mid-March: Plant onion sets and even garlic if you didn’t get to it last fall.
  • April: Start cool-season crops like broccoli, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, and radishes.

Lawn Care: Early Steps for a Lush Lawn
March and April are prime months to prep your lawn. Whether you’re overseeding or starting a new lawn, timing is everything.

Wait until temperatures are consistently warm—typically around April 20th is a safe bet.
Here’s how to prep:
  1. Clear the area of rocks and debris.
  2. Loosen the soil about 2–3 inches deep.
  3. Add fresh topsoil to level uneven spots.
  4. Spread your grass seed, then cover with about 1/4 inch of mushroom manure or straw.
  5. Keep the area moist with regular watering—morning and evening only. Avoid watering during the heat of the day.
  6. Mow once the grass reaches 3–4 inches tall.

Spring is a season full of fresh starts—and with a little preparation, your yard and garden will be ready to thrive. Need supplies or advice? Stop by Beall’s Nursery, and let us help you make the most of the season!
