Location: | Hilltop Murrysville Estate |
The Vision: | Modern Farmhouse with Luxury Backyard |
This newly built modern farmhouse in Murrysville provided the perfect blank canvas for a high-end backyard transformation. With a large, flat lot and sweeping hilltop views, our design team had the unique opportunity to craft a true resort-style outdoor living space, carefully positioned to take full advantage of the surrounding landscape.
The design centered around a clean, modern aesthetic to match the architecture of the home. A gentle rear yard slope was used to create multi-level entertaining areas, offering a dramatic view from the rear of the house down to the pool and pool house. The main patio—directly off the covered porch—was designated for everyday use, with a grill and dining space ideal for family meals and casual entertaining.
A strategically placed spa was designed for year-round use, located close to the house for winter convenience. Multi-level retaining walls were constructed to nestle the spa into the landscape, minimizing visual obstruction while maximizing functionality and aesthetics.
The pool house was designed to mirror the home’s rooflines and architectural style. Large in scale, it provides a four-season space for entertaining beyond the swimming months. A grand, wood-burning stone fireplace anchors the structure, flanked by built-in wood boxes and topped with a large outdoor TV—visible from both the bar area and the pool itself.
The fully equipped outdoor kitchen includes built-in storage, refrigerators, trash receptacles, and a large sink, all finished with sleek black granite countertops. These darker accents were chosen to tie into the home’s black windows, roof, and metal detailing. White Hardie Plank board-and-batten siding on the pool house complements the home’s exterior for a cohesive look.
The expansive 22’ x 44’ rectangular pool includes an 8’ deep end for diving and a 4’ shallow end for lounging. A large 7’ x 16’ sun deck provides space for multiple in-pool chaise lounges, enhanced by LED bubblers that offer calming water movement and illumination. Additional color-changing lights and laminar water features create a vibrant water-and-light display, visible from the pool house and adding a sense of luxury and drama.
Unilock Umbriano coping was selected for its upscale, resort-style appearance, eliminating visible plastic skimmer lids and metal cover plates for a cleaner finish. XL Umbriano pavers were used for the main pool deck to maintain a modern, high-end feel, while darker U-Cara pavers were used to define the firepit area and outdoor kitchen, adding contrast and visual interest.
The front landscape was kept clean and modern, with straight-edged beds, simplified plantings, and subtle pops of seasonal color. A textured stamped concrete sidewalk complements the home’s surrounding patios and adds a refined finishing touch.
