Multi-Phase Backyard Transformation Over 8 Years

Phase One began with the installation of a large, freeform pool that established a natural, organic look. The curved paver pool deck complemented the pool’s shape and created inviting pockets for chaise lounges, a dining area with an umbrella, and a cozy firepit. Large planters with palm trees and mandevilla vines added a tropical touch. A covered patio just off the rear of the home featured a rectangular grill island with bar seating, perfect for entertaining while enjoying TV outdoors. For safety, fencing was added around the pool to prevent unsupervised access by young children—an important consideration, especially since freeform pools cannot accommodate automatic covers.

Phase Two focused on transforming previously unused space outside the walkout basement. With Western PA’s limited pool season, the homeowners wanted a year-round swimming option. Our design team integrated a custom in-ground swim spa, complete with a Covana cover that provides both convenience and all-weather usability. A bar area was added at one end for entertaining, and custom LED strip lighting was incorporated into the steps and bar for a sophisticated nighttime ambiance. Opposite the spa, a built-in media wall offered privacy and a perfect spot for a TV.

Phase Three repurposed the area above the pool—formerly a playground—into a versatile sport court, reflecting the family's growing interest in sports. The site was leveled with several loads of gravel, then outfitted with athletic turf for lacrosse and synthetic hockey tiles for year-round use. Traditional sport court fencing and lighting completed the design. Its close proximity to the pool made it an ideal space for the kids to move freely between activities.

This project is a prime example of how thoughtful design and long-term planning can transform a property over time, evolving with a family’s needs while maintaining a cohesive, resort-style outdoor space.
