The Vision: | Transforming a Small Yard into a Resort-Style Retreat |
Despite the constraints, the design team identified a buildable area with a substantial grade change extending from the walkout basement to the rear of the property, just outside the easement zones. We carefully maximized every inch of usable space. The pool house was placed first, strategically using the slope to create a lower-level walkout for additional storage. This area housed pool equipment and served as extra storage for outdoor supplies.
The client preferred an organic look, so we designed a small, lagoon-style pool nestled naturally into the landscape between the home and the pool house. A custom-built spa was positioned between the pool and main house, providing year-round enjoyment and an ideal view of the backyard features.
To connect the upper entertaining area to the pool space, we installed large sandstone steps, creating a natural, tiered transition. The surrounding stone walls and dramatic fireplace at the pool house were finished with natural stone veneer, while sandstone pavers were selected for the patios and pool deck, lending a soft, elegant feel to the hardscape.
The pool house featured cedar-wrapped beams and complementary siding to enhance the natural aesthetic the client desired. On the upper level, a gas-burning firepit was added as a family-friendly gathering spot overlooking the sport court. The sport court itself was designed on a lower terrace, sized for multi-sport use, including pickleball, and outfitted with lighting for evening play.
To support this lower level, we engineered a massive 12-foot retaining wall—transforming a steep, unusable slope into a functional recreational space. Finally, lush landscaping and privacy plantings tied everything together, completing this serene backyard retreat.
With thoughtful design and expert craftsmanship, Beall’s turned a once difficult and limited yard into an extraordinary outdoor destination.
